Go Up a Size
When in doubt, size up. A larger
rug always looks more intentional and
gives little feet more room to land.
When choosing a bedroom rug, you’ll usually want to go bigger than you think. Think of anchoring the
entire sleeping area so that the space feels intentional and cozy. For a twin bed, a 5x8 is the sweet spot:
it fits comfortably under the lower two-thirds of the frame with a soft landing on both sides. For a full or
queen, step up to an 8x10 or 9x12 if you can. If a shared bedroom has two twin beds, a rug centered
between them can help unify the space.

Low-Pile Rugs for the Nursery
They’re great for tummy time, stable
underfoot during late-night feedings,
and easier to vacuum.
What are the best rug dimensions for a nursery?
The nursery rug should define the room’s central zone: the area where the crib, nursery chair, and
dresser come together, and where you’ll spend the most nighttime hours. A 5x8 is a good size for
most nurseries: large enough to anchor the crib and extend in front of the nursery chair, without
overwhelming a typically smaller room.
If your nursery runs larger, step up to a 6x9 and center it between the crib and seating area. For a
compact room or nursery nook, a 4x6 placed in front of the nursery chair provides softness and
comfort right where you need it most. Position the rug so the front legs of the chair sit on it so your
chair is anchored visually and keeps it from sliding during late-night rocking sessions.
Safety First
Whatever size you choose, remember to pair it with a non-slip rug pad to secure your rug and
prevent it from shifting.

Playroom Rug Ideas
In the playroom, the rug is the stage for everything: building blocks, board games, art projects, and
dance parties. Unlike the bedroom, where you’re sizing around a bed, the playroom rug should cover
the primary activity zone as generously as your space allows. Our recommendation: Go at least one size
larger than you think you need. For most dedicated playrooms, an 8x10 or 9x12 is ideal. This is large
enough to fit a play table and chairs entirely on the rug, with room left over for open floor play. A 6x9
works well for smaller playrooms or for carving out a designated play zone within a larger shared space,
like a loft or living room.
If you have a play table with 2–4 chairs, make sure the rug extends at least 18” beyond all sides of the
table so the chairs stay on the rug when pushed back.

how to choose the right rug material
Choose a Material for Durability & Comfort
The fiber your rug is made from shapes how it feels underfoot, how easy it is to clean, and how well it
holds up every day. When weighing a wool vs. synthetic rug for kids, there’s no single right answer.
It comes down to what your family needs most.
Natural Fibers: Wool, Cotton & Jute
Wool is naturally soft, exceptionally durable, and resistant to staining—its dense pile springs back
beautifully, even after years of foot traffic. Wool is also naturally hypoallergenic and doesn’t off-gas
VOCs, making it a reassuring choice for rooms where little ones spend hours close to the floor.
The tradeoff: Wool rugs generally require professional cleaning for deeper stains and are not machine-
washable. For nurseries, choose a low-pile wool so it’s easy to vacuum and won’t trap debris. For
bedrooms, a medium-pile wool delivers the softness kids love.
Cotton rugs are lightweight, naturally breathable, and often machine-washable, making them a practical
choice for playrooms and nurseries. Our washable cotton styles vacuum easily and can go straight into
the wash when playdough or juice strikes. Cotton is softer underfoot than jute but less resilient than
wool, so it’s best suited for lighter-traffic spaces or rooms where you plan to refresh the rug as kids grow.
Washable Performance Rugs
Our washable styles are artisan-crafted and made of shed-resistant fibers that can go straight into the
wash when playdough or juice strikes. They’re designed for real family life without sacrificing style.
Synthetic Fibers: Nylon, Polyester & Polypropylene
If your top priority is a rug that can survive anything, performance fabrics are your answer. Polypropylene
is stain-resistant because it doesn’t absorb liquid; spills bead up on the surface and wipe clean before
they can set. Nylon is the most resilient, holding up under heavy foot traffic without matting or crushing
over time.
Both fibers are colorfast and won’t fade, which make them ideal for the bold, graphic patterns that work
so well in kids’ spaces. They’re also often a budget-friendly option—a smart pick for a playroom where
the rug takes a daily beating.
